I find myself increasingly more jealous of my girlfriend and her career choice. The cute couple that we are, I chose to explore the world of documentary photography, whereas she chose the world of art photography.
Not to say I don’t have fun taking pictures of car crashes and the Saluki basketball team or getting the opportunity to spend a day with our university’s president, but she gets to do the one thing that we as photojournalists would ultimately lose our careers over: controlling what’s in the frame.
My job consists of capturing moments. Her job is to make moments, and both can be just as fun. For a recent project in her digital photography class, she had to choose a subject, then compose images where everything was the same color. We made great use of the red light and our roommate Ben. Naturally, I couldn’t resist snapping a few pictures of my own.
I found it to be pretty fun. I guess if I ever get tired of capturing the ups and downs of real life, I just might try to create ups and downs in my own frame. Who knows. Maybe the fashion world is beckoning.
At least my subjects would be nice to look at as opposed to sweaty guys and old dudes (no offense Mr. President).
